In January this year, the entire Icelandic nation was shocked to learn that a local girl had gone missing.

On Friday, January 13th, the 20-year-old Birna Brjánsdóttir was partying downtown with her friends, like most Icelanders her age would have.

Ísafjörður town, in the Icelandic Westfjords, has set up a three-dimensional pedestrian crossing in the central part of town.

According to Gauti Ívar Halldórsson, CEO of Vegamálun, the company behind the peculiar road-painting, the purpose is to lower traffic speed.

"A pedestrian crossing like this makes it look like there's something blocking the road," Gísli told Vísir. That way, drivers will automatically slow down their cars. Gísli explains that the idea originally came from New Delhi, the capital of India.

Farmers at Ós in Breiðdalur in the East Fjords caught nine tourists who had stolen a lamb and killed it. A witness says they were obviously hungry and just looking for meat for their barbecue. Charges were made to the police. The thieves were nine Afghans, all US residents. Kolbrún Rós Björgvinsdóttir, daughter of the farmer at Ós first noticed something strange when she spotted nine adult men trying to catch a lamb on the filed below the farm. They immediately called police and she contacted the owner of the field.

"There were nine of them together so I didn't want to go alone to talk to them, I just noticed something was odd, says Bjarki Svavarsson, another witness, speaking to Mbl.is.


He then went with the farmer at Ós, his daughter and another man towards the men who were driving two camper vans. According to Svavarsson they were impolite. "They were just shouting at us and lying. At first they wouldn't admit to anything and then they admitted to having taken a lamb. It was in a black bin bag in the back of the car and they had cut its throat."


The tourists gave the explanation that the lamb had been injured and needed to be put down."They told us they were saving the lamb from drowning after it had jumped into the sea. They were just making stuff up. They were just getting meat for their barbecue," says Svavarsson.


Local police soon showed up and took the men to the police station in Fáskrúðsfjörður where they admitted to their crime and paid the farmer for the lamb. They also had to pay 120 thousand Icelandic kronas as a fine and were then released. "I find it really strange that men from abroad come to hunt for their food. I have no idea what they were thinking, nine grown men."

Z.B. Fiona Weber-Steinhaus in der NZZ vom 17.03.2017 unter dem Titel: Ein Land sucht einen Mörder (Rubrik "Gesellschaft", Seite 54).
Und das gleich auf einer Doppelseite.

Der Titel hingegen ist leicht irreführend - sollte vielmehr heissen: Ein Land suchte einen Mörder. Denn der ist gefunden - ein zweiter Tatverdächtiger ist namentlich bekannt, wurde aber aufgrund bestimmter Aussagen bezüglich der Tat vorerst wieder auf freien Fuss gesetzt. Der Prozess beginnt bald - die Indizien sind eindeutig.

... that Birna's body was found on a beach in south Iceland earlier today. The cause of death has not been determined, but they are treating this as a homicide.

Seit einer Woche ist nichts mehr so, wie es vorher war.
Ist passiert, was noch nie vorher passierte in diesem Land, da es in dieser Beziehung als absolut sicher galt.

Am frühen Samstagmorgen vor genau einer Woche ist in der Hauptstadt eine 20-Jährige auf dem Nachhauseweg unter sehr mysteriösen Umständen völlig von der Bildfläche verschwunden.

Seitdem ist auf der Insel buchstäblich der Teufel los. Was sich dort seit einer Woche abspielt, schlägt alles, was sich isländische Krimi-Autoren in ihren grenzenlosen Phantasien bisher ausgedacht haben.

Der Fall ist noch nicht restlos aufgeklärt - dieses Wochenende soll endlich etwas mehr Licht in die Dunkelheit bringen. Hochspezialisierte Einheiten suchen in einem möglichen und geographisch einigermassen abgrenzbaren Gebiet nach der Leiche der jungen Frau. Illusionen sind keine angebracht - es wird kein happy-end geben. Die bisherigen Indizien sprechen dagegen. Bald werden auch die Resultate der ersten DNA-Analysen ausgewertet werden können.

Als "Segen" bzw. als grosse Hilfe beim Versuch zur Aufklärung des Falles erwiesen sich übrigens die sehr zahlreich vorhandenen Überwachungskameras.

Die ausländischen Medien haben offensichtlich noch nichts mitbekommen. Der hier Schreibende mag aber jetzt nicht in weitere Details gehen - bald wird man weltweit und wahrscheinlich sehr ausführlich von dieser tragischen Geschichte erfahren.
